The International Student of the Month is a program designed to recognize international students who have excelled in their study abroad experience.
Three aspects are considered when choosing the International Student of the Month. The first aspect considered is the student’s performance in classes being taken at the Universidad de Viña del Mar. The professors select a student each month during their monthly meetings. The second aspect considered is participation in extra curricular activities. This depends on the student but it can be anything from a self-started volunteer activity or a volunteer program that is sponsored by the University. The third aspect taken into consideration is cultural adaptation by the international student.
In return for being selected the International Student of the Month, the student will receive a special gift from the University. Our hopes are that this program will motivate UVM international students to become involved in the Chilean community that they call home for a few months. We look forward to announcing the June 2007 International Student of the Month soon!!!

International Student of the Month: June
Selene Black
University of Louisville
The International Student of the Month for June 2007 is Selene Black from the University of Louisville located in Louisville, Kentucky.
Selene is a junior majoring in Biology with a minor in Spanish.
Chile was Selene’s destination of choice because, “I wanted to learn Spanish in a place that wasn’t typical like Mexico or Spain.”
Selene is not only studying Spanish at the UVM but has become involved in the English Alliance Program where she has had the opportunity to be a teacher’s assistant in English at the Franco-Ingles school located in Viña del Mar.
Selene stated that her favorite part about her study abroad experience has been, “being able to learn about the world by experience rather than through a textbook.”
The International Office would like to congratulate Selene on being named International Student of the Month. We wish you the best for the rest of your time in Chile and we hope that you will continue to excel in your academic endeavours as you return to the USA.
